Highway 99 will be closed and traffic re-routed at the Steveston exchange over three weekends as construction crews remove the old overpass.
The north half of the new five-lane overpass has been completed, and the next steps are the demolition of the existing overpass and construction to begin on the south half.
Starting this weekend (Jan. 31-Feb. 3) and continuing over two more weekends (Feb. 7-10, Feb. 21-24), this section of the highway will be closed and traffic will be directed onto the on- and off-ramps to get around the demolition work.
The highway closure is anticipated between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m. and drivers are advised to expect delays. During this time, there will be periods of single-lane alternating traffic on Steveston Highway.
The closures are expected to end at 5 a.m. on Monday mornings during these three weekends.
During the day, between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m., lane shifts will be in place on Highway 99.
Furthermore, the northbound ramp onto Highway 99 will be closed and an eastbound, two-lane left turn signal will be in place leading to the north-side ramp detour.
As the construction of the south side of the overpass begins, this detour will remain in place until mid-September.
Demolition work is weather-dependent and may be rescheduled should conditions be unfavourable.
Sidewalk access will be maintained on the north side of the new structure with minor impacts to pedestrian routes on Steveston Highway.
Cyclists will have the option to dismount and use the sidewalk to cross Highway 99 or use the roadway.
There will be minor impacts to transit stops and regular traffic will be maintained on Steveston Highway.
