Can you remember going to the movies in Richmond about 34 years ago?

If yes, there’s a good chance you headed to the old Famous Players Theatre at the Richport Shopping Centre on Ackroyd and No. 3 roads.

This shot from the City of Richmond Archives department was taken in 1989, when the top flicks of the time were Batman (Michael Keaton), Road House and When Harry Met Sally.

According to CinemaTreasures.org, Famous Players opened the Richport Cinemas in 1985 with two screens, each seating 398 for a total of 796 seats.

Cineplex Odeon later took over the cinema, following the opening of the Richmond Centre 6 by Famous Players.

Due to competition from the SilverCity Riverport, the Richport cinema was closed in 1999 and renovated for retail.
