Richmond’s Burkeville community echoed with car horns, sirens, bells and shouts of congratulations as neighbours and students came out to celebrate with the graduates in a car parade on Sunday afternoon.
The parade was led by a Richmond Fire-Rescue firetruck and the Richmond RCMP followed by multiple cars, children on their bicycles and even little ones in their remote-controlled ATVs.
Roughly 12 vehicles were decorated with streamers and balloons, while several parents had posters highlighting their children’s name on them.
Richmond resident Renee Robinson, who is also part of Burkeville’s grad committee, said the parade was a way to celebrate all the students in the community who are graduating and had their school year cut short.
“We wanted to give the kids a good end to their year,” said Robinson, adding that it was “amazing to see all the kids smiling and laughing with their parents in the parade.”
“I think everyone had a great time and I’m so thankful to see the community coming together for this event and even having the RCMP and the firetruck out here as well.”
Robinson told the Richmond News that people who were standing on the sidewalks cheering were also staying socially distanced.
“People were being aware of their surroundings and wearing masks while celebrating and it shows people care even during celebrations like this.”
The parade ended at Burkeville Park where snacks and drinks were offered to everyone.
