Positive aging takes centre stage in Richmond for seniors week

Oct. 1 is national seniors day, recognized in Canada and internationally.

The City of Richmond is holding a fair where participants can learn about aging positively.

“Positive aging” is once again the theme for city-organized seniors activities, which starts on Oct. 1, National Seniors Day in Canada and the U.N. International Day of Older Persons.

The fair will be held on Thursday, Oct. 5 at the Minoru Centre for Active Living from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Other activities in Richmond include a pickleball tournament and social at West Richmond Community Centre.

Seniors can learn about programming and share ideas for future programming at Thursday’s social.

A printed flyer can also be picked up from any Richmond Community Services facility. All are welcome to attend.

Highlights of seniors week:

Sunday, Oct. 1 to Saturday, Oct. 7 – Positive Aging Campaign

This campaign aims to celebrate seniors, promote healthy aging and reduce ageism by showcasing positive images of five seniors in the community. The campaign can be viewed on the City’s website and in person at various City of Richmond community centres, the Seniors Centre at Minoru Centre for Active Living and City Hall.

Sunday, Oct. 1, 12:30-3 p.m. – Pickleball Tournament

Thompson Community Centre: Play in a fun round robin style tournament for beginners. Tournament play and light refreshments included. Registration required.

Tuesday, Oct. 3, 10 a.m. to10:45 a.m. – National Seniors Day Social

West Richmond Community Centre: Celebrate the day with light refreshments, learning about 55+ year program activities and sharing ideas for future programming. Registration required.

Thursday, Oct. 5, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. – Activate! Positive Aging Fair

Seniors Centre at Minoru Centre for Active Living: Join the keynote speaker, wellness workshops, fitness try-it events and blood pressure checks. Visit booths from 40+ local organizations and companies offering programs, products and services specifically for those 55+ years. Drop-in and pre-registered opportunities available.
