A local charity serving people in Richmond and across Metro Vancouver received a $105,000 donation to help low-income community members battling food insecurity.
Vancouver Food Runners is one of four charities across Canada to receive part of a $500,000 donation from iA Financial Group through a philanthropic contest to support their work.
This year's contest focused on societal issues such as homelessness, food insecurity, addictions, violence, discrimination, mental illness, isolation and youth dropping out of school.
Vancouver Food Runners partners with non-profits to increase healthy food access and to give support to residents including Indigenous, Black, immigrant and newcomer communities, at-risk children and youth, individuals experiencing disability and seniors who have low incomes.
Its operation expanded to Richmond, North Shore, Burnaby, Surrey and Delta in 2023.
This donation will help Vancouver Food Runners's team of six staff members organize more than 10,000 food rescues next year, which will ultimately deliver more than 1.6 million pounds of healthy food to community members in need.
"Each year, we are deeply moved and impressed by the inspiring proposals submitted to our philanthropic contest by charities from all regions of Canada," said Denis Ricard, president and CEO of iA Financial Group.
"Their remarkable work to improve the daily lives of Canadians is clear for all to see. I am proud that iA Financial Group plays a significant role in supporting charitable efforts across the country. On behalf of the company, I would like to thank every charity that submitted a proposal for the important work they do."
