Richmond RCMP is reminding everyone to protect their gifts from being stolen by thieves from vehicles this holiday shopping season.
"The holiday season is about joy and giving, but thieves can take advantage of this busy time," said Cpl. Adriana O'Malley, media relations officer at Richmond RCMP.
"Never leave your gifts or valuables in your vehicle, even for a short time. A few simple precautions can make all the difference in preventing theft and ensuring a safe and joyful season for everyone."
Aside from thieves stealing gifts or personal items, they may smash car windows resulting in costly repairs.
Being aware and taking precautionary steps can prevent situations like this and reduce crime.
Preventing theft from vehicles:
- Do not leave any valuables in your vehicle no matter how small. This includes loose change or a lighter and always remove personal items like purses, wallets, credit cards, electronics, and holiday gifts.
- Use your trunk for storage. If you must leave items in your car, secure them in the trunk before reaching your destination to avoid alerting thieves.
- Be alert to suspicious behaviour. If you see someone lingering near vehicles, report it immediately to the local police. Try to provide a description of the person and their vehicle, including the license plate, but do not confront them. Your safety comes first.
If you are a victim of theft or attempted theft, report the incident to police — even if nothing was stolen. Your report may assist in ongoing investigations, help police identify crime trends and target resources where they are needed most.
