Vandals have once again targeted a rainbow crosswalk in Richmond.

After being vandalized last summer at least four times, the colourful crosswalk that is a symbol of support for the LGBTQ community, was vandalized again on Tuesday night.

The spraypainted vandalism included a homophobic slur as well as an obscene graphic.

Richmond School District staff were in the process of repairing the crosswalk on Wednesday, said David Sadler, spokesperson for the school district.

Furthermore, they are looking into installing security cameras in the future, he added.

While the vandalism is on school district property, City of Richmond spokesperson Clay Adams said it's "extremely disappointing and frustrating that some in the community feel it necessary to vandalize this and other symbols of inclusiveness across the city."

The city is encouraging anyone with information about this vandalism act to reach out to the Richmond RCMP.

The majority of “hate crimes and incidents” in Richmond in 2023 were against the LGBTQ community, largely the vandalism of rainbow crosswalks, according to Richmond RCMP.
