A Richmond-based charity is offering up to $10,000 per year to young people with disabilities who are pursuing post-secondary education.
The new Rick and Amanda Hansen Scholarship for Youth with Disabilities, offered by the Rick Hansen Foundation (RHF), is open to youth under 30 years old aiming to complete a one to four-year post-secondary program at a publicly funded institution in Canada.
Recipients will receive funding of up to $10,000 per year with a maximum of $40,000 through the scholarship, which aims to remove financial barriers for those wishing to achieve their career aspirations.
The scholarship is named after RHF founder Rick Hansen and board director Amanda Hansen and is funded by the April 1 Foundation.
“Twenty per cent of youth in Canada are living with a disability and people with disabilities are less likely to report completing higher levels of education compared to those living without,” said RHF CEO Doramy Ehling.
“Rick and Amanda Hansen believe that people of all abilities should have the right to a barrier-free education. This is an excellent opportunity for youth who align with their values of perseverance, inclusivity, and being a difference maker.”
Applicants must also demonstrate "clarity of career goals and alignment with the chosen academic program" and the "ability to successfully complete the chosen academic program," among other criteria.
Applications are open from now until May 31 and recipients for the 2024 to 2025 cohort will be announced in August.
