The Richmond School District is receiving a grant from the B.C. government to help students and families with expenses and learning necessities.
A funding of $809,000 from B.C.'s Student and Family Affordability Fund will help pay for school supplies, school fees and class trips for students in Richmond.
In addition, the money will also help with costs associated with joining a school sports team or music program.
The Student and Family Affordability Fund is receiving an additional boost of $20 million this spring to make this happen.
More than $60 million has been provided to school districts across the province through the program over the past two years.
Richmond's New Democrat MLAs Kelly Greene, Aman Singh and Henry Yao said the funding will support the education journey for every kid in the city.
“With this increased funding, we’re making sure our students can fully participate in educational opportunities without barriers and helping ease the financial worries of Richmond families," said Greene.
Singh and Yao added that the financial support will allow students to develop skills outside the classroom.
They highlighted that investing in children's education is about more than classroom instruction; it's about building a community where every child can excel.
Furthermore, the Richmond School District received over $2.3 million from the Feeding Futures Fund for food programs.
This fund has given $214 million in the last three years to grow and improve local school programs in B.C.
