About 150 archers from across British Columbia will gather in Richmond this weekend for the 2025 B.C. Indoor Archery Championships.
The two-day event, hosted by the Richmond Rod and Gun Club, will take place April 19 to 20 at the Richmond Curling Rink.
Participants of the championship are all registered members of BC Archery or Archery Canada.
Richmond Rod and Gun Club president Mike Thorne said the event marks the first time in nearly 70 years, if ever, that Richmond has played host to the provincial archery championships.
"You have to be at a certain (club) level before you can host the championships," Thorne said.
Richmond Rod and Gun Club was founded in 1955 and offers airgun shooting and an indoor archery range. Several of its members have competed at the international level.
Thorne added that bringing the championships to Richmond helps boost the city's profile.
"I think it's good for the club, local clubs and for the city," he said.
"It means we can look forward to hosting more and bigger archery events."
Thorne noted that while many local clubs struggled to restart after the COVID-19 pandemic, most have since revived their weekly programs.
"The goal of our club is to grow the sport — not just the club," he said.
"We're trying to get Richmond on the map, to promote the sport and hope to become a destination for it."
The championships run from 9:30 a.m. to about 5 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, and will feature athletes of all ages competing in barebow, Olympic recurve and compound bow categories.
