Richmond cryptocurrency case moves to B.C. Supreme Court

A large portion of the cryptocurrency was recovered, says Richmond RCMP.

A case involving alleged theft of cryptocurrency has been moved from provincial court to B.C. Supreme Court.

A Richmond case involving the alleged theft of cryptocurrency and unlawful confinement has moved to B.C. Supreme Court.

A jury trial is scheduled for Jan. 12 to Feb. 6, 2026, for 34-year-old Jin Da Xing of Richmond on five counts.

Charges were originally laid in Richmond Provincial Court, but Crown is proceeding with a direct indictment in B.C. Supreme Court.

The charges are for break and enter, extortion, using an imitation firearm in an indictable offence, unlawful confinement and possession of stolen property in excess of $5,000.

Richmond RCMP said the investigation was “lengthy and complex” and its Serious Crime Unit took the lead with expertise from the Economic Crime Unit. They were also supported by the National Crypto Support Unit.

A large portion of the cryptocurrency was recovered, according to Richmond RCMP.

The alleged victims were a middle-aged couple who lived in north Richmond.

The alleged crimes took place on Sept. 13, 2022.
