A Richmond driver was ticketed for driving home alone after failing his class 7 road test last month.

This was just one of 968 traffic tickets handed out by Richmond RCMP's road safety unit (RSU) during a period of increased enforcement in July.

The driver was one of 30 motorists who were caught in the HOV lane at Russ Baker Way and Miller Road on July 29.

Throughout the month of July, Richmond RCMP gave out 260 tickets for speeding, 199 for driver's licence infractions, 93 for distracted driving and 42 for impaired drug or alcohol infractions.

On July 31, Richmond RCMP caught and fined two motorcyclists in separate incidents.

One was riding 157 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on Highway 91, almost double the speed limit, after fleeing from police, and, when caught, racked up $1,593 in fines.

The second motorcyclist was stopped for riding without insurance nor a valid license. This was a repeat violation for the rider as they had previously fled from police in other cities, which led to more charges and his motorbike being impounded.

Richmond RCMP's RSU began its motorcycle safety awareness campaign in May to highlight the importance of safe riding practices and educating the public about motorcycle safety.

In addition, they are emphasizing the dangers of impaired and erratic driving among motorcycle riders.

"Our proactive efforts in July, especially concerning high-risk behaviours and motorcycle safety, demonstrate our ongoing commitment to making Richmond's roads safer for everyone," said Sgt. Eric Baskette, spokesperson for the Richmond RCMP RSU.

"We urge all road users to adhere to traffic laws, drive responsibly and support our efforts to protect our community."
