A Richmond supermarket being replaced by a market rival will, reportedly, not retain the current staff and will be closed for months for renovations.
That’s according to a number of employees at the IGA store in Garden City Shopping Centre – at Blundell and Garden City roads – who reached out to the Richmond News after we reported earlier this week about the store closing in a few weeks.
Despite repeated attempts, the News has been unable to get a response from either IGA or Save-On Foods, which is understood to be taking over the lease from IGA on or around Oct. 22.
But people claiming to be staff at the IGA contacted the News to say that none of the workers are unionized and none of them are being kept on when Save-On moves in.
And they added that the store will likely be shut down for six to eight months for renovations.
“None of the employees have been asked to stay and are looking for jobs,” wrote one of the workers, who asked not to be named.
“Thank you for all the years we've served you…”
A regular shopper at IGA contacted the News earlier this week to say staff had been telling her of the switch.
When the News called the store on Wednesday afternoon, the employee who answered confirmed the changeover is taking place in a few weeks.
