If you think your eyesight is getting better on Richmond’s roads recently, you’d be right – well, sort of.
The City of Richmond is in the process of upgrading its major intersection signs from standard lighting to more visible and energy efficient LEDs.
The program, which is funded through city development contributions, so there is no cost to taxpayers, began in 2018.
So far, it has upgraded 117 intersections, with 64 still to go over the next few years.
Crews could be seen hoisting the new signs into place at Cooney Road and Westminster Highway last week, along with Garden City Road at Westminster, among others.
“Each intersection upgrade includes four LED signs, electrical labour and installation at a cost of around $15,000 each, depending on the size and complexity of the location,” said city spokesperson Clay Adams in an email to the Richmond News.
“The shift to LED also makes the signs more visible from distance, which is an added safety feature for visitors and high-volume intersections.”
