A team of Richmond lifeguards captured the championship at a recent provincial competition held at South Arm Pool.
Connor McMillan, James Liu, Matthew Howie, and Timofey Zinin, who made up the team “Whistleblowers,” competed in four challenges and came first overall, winning the Barnsley Shield.
The challenges at the Barnsley Provincial Lifeguard Championship were a simulated emergency response, line throw, pool simulations, team first aid and individual first aid.
Zinin, who is a Instructor Lifeguard, was also awarded the Golden Oxygen Tank and Stewart Schon Sportsmanship Cup.
There were nine teams competing in front of a crowd, which gave the public an opportunity to understand the skills needed to be a lifeguard, including critical thinking, teamwork, leadership and first aid and rescue skills.
The competition was organized by the Lifesaving Society, which is the standard setting agency for lifeguards and lifesavers.
The winner of the pool championships is awarded the Barnsley Shield, which was donated in 1936 by George Barnsley of England to commemorate the Golden Jubilee (1886 –1936) of the City of Vancouver.
In the donation letter he expressed a desire that the shield “encourage teamwork, rather than leaving individuals to flounder for themselves.”
