The City of Richmond is looking for board members for the Olympic Oval Corporation.

This comes after city council decided not to appoint the board members recommended by city staff earlier this year, rather they wanted a public call for members.

The City of Richmond, as the sole shareholder of the Oval corporation, appoints the board of directors. In June, however, when city staff brought recommendations to city council, Coun. Carol Day suggested opening up the search for board members to the public that might be interested.

This was approved in a 6-3 vote with Couns. Alexa Loo, Andy Hobbs and Mayor Malcolm Brodie voting against the motion.

The Oval Corporation is an arms-length entity owned by the City of Richmond.

The city is the sole shareholder and its annual general meeting, where board members are elected, is held by city council.

The Oval’s budget was expected to be about $1.8 million in the negative last year, but, in fact, the year ended with a $700,000 surplus.

The city is looking for people for the board of directors who have experience in high-performance sports management or operating a sports facilities, in entertainment, business management and corporate governance, or people with experience in law, commercial real estate, marketing and sales or retail.

Anyone interested in joining the Oval board should email [email protected]. The deadline for sending in a resume and cover letter is Friday, Sept. 22 at 4 p.m.
