A 31-year-old Richmond man died Wednesday morning after being hit by a vehicle as he crossed Steveston Highway near Southdale Road Tuesday evening.

"At the time of the collision, it was raining heavily and visibility was poor," said Cpl. Sherrdean Turley. "The pedestrian was wearing dark clothing and was not seen by the driver until he was struck."

Richmond fire rescue and emergency health services took the pedestrian to Vancouver General Hospital Tuesday night in critical condition.

The driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Richmond Hospital for treatment.

Richmond's Road Safety Unit is continuing with investigation with the assistance of officers from the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction services.

The victim's identity is being withheld at this time pending notification of next of kin.

Richmond RCMP would like to ask the public adapt to the changing conditions that come with the new season. They ask drivers to slow down and pedestrians to use caution when crossing the road, to cross only at crosswalks and to wear clothing that increases their visibility.

The RCMP also send condolences to the victim's family and friends.
