The City of Richmond has been recognized provincially for its recent child-care plan – the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) gave the city an Excellence in Governance award for its 2017-2022 Child Care Needs Assessment and Strategy.
The award is given for decisions and policies that are “outcomes-based and consensus oriented,” and that encourage participation from cities and exemplify “best practices in accountability, effectiveness, and long-term thinking,” according to UBCM press release.
The UBCM conference, which attracts mayors and councillors from across the province to discuss hot-button issues, started off on Monday and continues to Friday.
Wednesday’s schedule includes a keynote address from Peter Mansbridge, former anchor of The National, an address by Andrew Weaver, leader of the BC Green Party and Selina Robinson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing.
The day will end with a reception put on by the Consulate-General of China at the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel. Some Richmond councillors have spoken against the reception because of on-going tensions between China and Canada.
Delegates at UBCM will discuss today whether to continue the practise of allowing foreign governments to sponsor events. The China reception will net the convention $6,000 in sponsorship.
