The ninth World Championship of Chinese Cuisine (WCCC) is coming to Vancouver in November and many Richmond restaurants will be itching to bring the title to the North American hub for Asian dining.
It will be the first time the WCCC, which happens every four years, is hosted in Canada, after being held in the likes of Rotterdam in the Netherlands, Singapore, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou in China, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, and Tokyo in Japan.
During the WCCC, from Nov. 29 to 30, at JW Marriott Parq Vancouver, chefs will be tasked to prepare four dishes within two hours, from appetizers to main courses and desserts, and have them judged by a culinary panel, according to the Canada Catering Association (CCA), the nonprofit organizer of the event.
“It’s an international competition, equivalent to the Olympics of Chinese cuisine. There will be over 400 chefs in 100 teams who have the highest expertise in Chinese food from dozens of participating countries,” said Charlie Huang chairman of the CCA.
Chefs from different countries will participate in the event after being recommended by the World Federation of Chinese Catering Industry. The organizer said many Richmond restaurants will showcase their culinary skills at the competition but didn’t reveal the number or names of them.
“Excellent Chinese chefs from all over the world…will demonstrate superb Chinese cooking skills and advanced cooking creativity, representing the highest level of Chinese cooking in the world today,” said Huang.
“We hope that through the competition of world chefs, we can inspire team spirit, reflect personal cooking skills, and promote Chinese food skills.”
