A Richmond resident is one of the 11 recipients of the LifeLabs Family Scholarship this year.

Richmond's Ramya Shah received the $2,000 scholarship, presented to children of LifeLabs employees to support their post-secondary education.

Students are awarded based on academic excellence, leadership, extracurricular activities, volunteering, employment, and a short essay on teamwork and inclusivity.

Shah is majoring in science at the University of British Columbia and is described as a "key leader in youth initiatives," including his role in his school's New Faces Leadership program.

He is the son of Diplai Shah, a lab assistant at LifeLabs.

LifeLabs awarded 10 scholarships across Canada, along with one additional $2,000 scholarship provided by The Co-operators.

"At LifeLabs, we believe in the power of education to transform lives," said Charles Brown, president and CEO of LifeLabs.

"These scholarships are one way we can invest in the future of our employees' families, helping the next generation of leaders and innovators achieve their goals."

The three other B.C. recipients are Surrey's Udayvir Randhawa and Joven Gill, and Pitt Meadows' Mara Dirlau.
