Richmondites asked to help clear snow from drains to avoid floods

A 'significant' winter storm is expected this weekend.

Richmondites are asked to help keep the drains clear to prevent flooding.

The City of Richmond is asking the community for help in anticipation of more snow and freezing rain.

The incoming winter storm will bring a "unique" situation of heavy snow and rain followed by melting snow, and the city is hoping Richmondites can help prevent water pooling and localized flooding.

"Richmond’s extensive pump and stormwater system is more than capable of handling the forecasted rainfall amounts," reads the city's press release.

According to the release, Richmond's flood protection system is "one of the most comprehensive" in the province. There are 39 drainage pump stations, which are capable of pumping 52 million litres of water per minute when operating at full capacity.

The challenge, however, is clearing the way for the water to get to the drainage system. And this is where community members come in.

To help clear the drains, Richmondites are asked to help with the following:

  • Remove snow and ice from catch basins on and near your property, as well as storm drains on the streets around your property.
  • Help your neighbours clear their storm drains and catch basins as well if they're out of town or need assistance.
  • Do not park vehicles on any main arterial roads (Priority 1 and 2 roads indicated on the snow response map) if possible. Snow plows will be coming through to clear gutters adjacent to the curbs to let melting snow drain into the catch basins.

In the meantime, multiple crews and additional support staff are scheduled to work 24/7 to clear ice build-up and snow from the drainage system on main arterial roads, including storm drains, catch basins, ditches, culverts and gutters.

The city has also added extra call takers at the city’s 24/7 Dispatch Line at 604-270-8721 to respond to issues on a priority basis.
