Walk the streets of Steveston and you might encounter Snow White, a man-eating plant, a bug-eyed skeleton or even a scarecrow-eating bear is it a plot for an episode of ABCs Once Upon a Time?

No, its the 3rd Annual Steveston Scarecrow Crawl put on by the Steveston Merchants Association.

The initial idea was from the board because typically October and November are slow months in Steveston, said Vince Morlet, SMA vice president and owner of Tapenade Bistro. We wanted to create a little excitement in the village and give residents and visitors alike a reason to visit the village.

Modeled after the popular New England Scarecrow Crawls, residents and visitors are encouraged to meander through Steveston Village to see whats lurking in front of storefronts, restaurants and offices.

The last two years weve had amazing attendance, about 1,000 people it helped that the weather was sunny and beautiful both years, added Morlet. But its happening again this year, rain or shine.

Also, this Sunday, the SMA is hosting the Steveston Scarecrow Hayday, at the Gulf of Georgia Fishermans Park with a pumpkin-rolling contest, bobbing for apples and burlap sack races. The free events runs from 1 to 3 p.m. and is for all ages.

Its all about the association thanking the community and getting the kids, young and old, out for some really fun Halloween events, added Morlet. Everyone is invited to bring their cameras and have their photos taken in front of the themed-scarecrows.

Check out the Scarecrow Crawl, which runs right through until Oct. 31. For more information about these events and any upcoming ones, visit the association online at www.exploresteveston.com.
