Richmond will be home to two night markets this summer, despite one of the owners saying the city isnt big enough for the both of them.
City council approved the opening of the original Richmond Night Market at a new location near the River Rock Casino, following Mondays public hearing.
Tonight was a big night for the Richmond Night Market, and Im overjoyed that the city has once again displayed its confidence in this event and the people who are working so hard to make it happen, said market founder Raymond Cheung.
Raymond Cheung established the Richmond Night Market in 2000 on Vulcan Way, where it operated until 2007. He didnt seek a lease for the following year due to increased rent.
In 2008, Paul Cheung (no relation) opened a night market at the same location. Raymond Cheung successfully sued for copyright infringement and Paul Cheung was forced to change the name of his event to the Summer Night Market.
Earlier this month, when Raymond Cheung announced he intended to resurrect the original Richmond Night Market on a vacant lot at the north end of No. 3 Road, Paul Cheung said he worried there were not enough spectators or vendors to support two such large events.
