This was 2024 in Richmond: Restaurant openings of the year

From the Lower Mainland's only Armenian store to B.C.'s first robot bubble tea shop, Richmond has had a delicious year.

What is Richmond if we don’t talk about food and drink spots in the city this year?

Here are five of the most interesting food spots that have caught the attention of Richmond News readers:

1. Okome

Richmond has a lot of sushi restaurants throughout the city, but Steveston takes it home with an inari sushi-specific eatery having opened this summer.

The tiny restaurant site inside Minato Village on No. 1 Road and Steveston Highway serves inari sushi, which is vinegared rice stuffed inside sweet and salty, deep-fried tofu pockets and topped with raw or cooked fish.

There are 25 different types of inari sushi on the menu along with other traditional Japanese dishes such as salads, torched sushi and sashimi.

2. Lamajoun

Richmond is home to the Lower Mainland's only Armenian restaurant.

This tiny restaurant is tucked away in an industrial area on River Road in the Bridgeport neighbourhood.

The family-owned eatery features Armenian and Georgian cuisine with dishes such as pide, a bread boat containing cheese and egg, borscht soup, beef kebab wraps and barbecued lamb chops.

Inside the unsuspecting, two-level restaurant, the owners use a dumbwaiter to deliver food to the dining area above the kitchen.

3. Tea Industries

B.C.'s first robot bubble tea shop opened in Richmond city centre this spring.

The tea shop features a robotic arm named Toffee, which fills all the bubble tea orders.

The entire process from ordering to picking up your drink is fully automated, perfect for those who are introverted. Nevertheless, a few staff are on-site to answer questions and help Toffee with mechanical issues.

Its menu offers a variety of drinks including assam black milk tea, Thai milk tea and passion green tea.

4. Gyubee Japanese Grill

A new Ontario-based all-you-can-eat Japanese barbecue spot opened in Richmond this fall.

It's known for its wide variety of barbecue meat and vegetable items as well as sushi, chicken wings and Korean food items.

The restaurant also has a variety of desserts such as creme brulee, soft-serve ice cream and non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks.

This is B.C.'s first location of the Ontario-based chain restaurant.

5. House of Dawn

A new 200-seat restaurant specializing in Asian fusion cuisine opened in Richmond city centre this fall.

The restaurant introduced its "affordable, fine-dining" menu to Richmond's food scene, including dishes such as chicken lettuce wrap, mussels in chilli mirin sauce, burgers, Asian ragu rigatoni and desserts. It also has a long cocktail list.

The restaurant is a 10,000-square-foot space with five separate dining areas ranging from a cocktail lounge to VIP rooms.
