A field house is being proposed for Hugh Boyd Community Park. It will cost more than $19 million.

Richmond city council have agreed on a name for the new Hugh Boyd Community Facility and Fieldhouse.

The new $19 million facility will be called the "West Richmond Pavilion," a decision made by city council on Monday.

Consistent with the names of other structures in the city, such as the Brighouse Pavilion, it depicts the location and purpose of the facility.

This name also alludes to the proximity of the West Richmond Community Centre, but was originally not recommended due to its broadness.

At the parks and recreation meeting last week, Coun. Carol Day, who is the liaison to the West Richmond Community Centre, said she consulted with the association and they "unanimously" chose the name that reflected the community centre.

Coun. Bill McNulty noted he would have preferred the name "West Lu," which is historically what the area and community centre were called before being renamed West Richmond Community Centre.

“Hugh Boyd Park Pavilion” was the original recommendation from city staff. This name would have created a geographical connection with the park and would have made it easier for users to find it, according to the staff report

The word pavilion also matches the naming of other facilities in Richmond’s parks and alludes to the function of the building, while reflecting the history of the Hugh Boyd Community Park and the city’s first reeve.

"West Richmond Annex” was the last option, which also represents its proximity to the West Richmond Community Centre, but doesn’t encompass the building’s functionality or its precise location.

On July 8, council approved the site, design and $19 million budget for the project. On July 22, an amendment of $850,000 was added to the budget after the city council decided to add a bigger limited-service kitchen and a moveable wall between multipurpose rooms.

With 10,830 square feet of total indoor area, the facility will include dressing rooms, washrooms, multipurpose rooms, a limited-service kitchen and concessions.

Additionally, a 1,000-square-foot covered outdoor viewing space will be raised, attracting local sports groups and high-profile competitions.
