The Richmond News understands that the hold and secure security protocol at Richmond Secondary was activated due to an incident outside the school.

There were reports on social media of a large police presence in the area just before the security alert around 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Minoru Boulevard school.

One nearby resident contacted the police after witnessing a man acting erratically near the school.

"I called the cops and went outside and saw the guy run back towards the high school," the resident told the News.

"I flagged down two police cars and told them where the guy had ran to. They called me back a few hours to tell me they had gotten the guy help."

A spokesperson for the school district said the the RCMP initiated a “hold and secure,” protocol. which is a "perimeter lockout, in response to a community incident."

"When there is a hold and secure…the school’s priority is to focus on the safety of our students and staff.

"The RCMP monitored our school during this (protocol) and together we worked to achieve the priority of ensuring the safety of our students and staff."
