Update: Richmond shooting leaves 2 dead

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has been deployed

Richmond RCMP have confirmed that a shooting in the Terra Nova area on Friday night has left two people dead.

In a statement issued Saturday, Richmond RCMP said officers “quickly flooded the area” of Westminster Highway and Barnard Drive, near Terra Nova Park in west Richmond, after receiving a report of two victims suffering gunshot wounds around 8:40 p.m.

Mounties secured the area and requested the assistance of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), which is now at the scene. There is no concern for public safety, RCMP said.

Police did not provide details about the victims. It’s also not known if the shooting was related to the ongoing Lower Mainland gang conflict.

A home in the area remained taped off Saturday morning, according to a witness.

Mounties said that, as the investigation is in the evidence gathering phase, no further information will be released at this time.

Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to call the IHIT information line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at [email protected].  To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers by phone at 1-800-222-8477.

Richmond woman targeted over past year by random stalker safe

The Richmond woman who told the News about how she has been living in fear of a random stalker over the past year says rumours circulating on social media that the shooting occurred at her home aren't true.

Eleven times over the past 13 months, Jesse Castillo, 39, who is understood to be homeless, has banged on the door of Koszima Mair's Terra Nova home and tried the handle. He is currently charged with two counts of breach of a recognizance and is in custody.

"(We're) totally safe and sound. He's still in jail, so there's nothing for us to worry about," she told the News.

Castillo is set to be in court on July 21, and will be in custody at least until then, said Mair.
