Deal alert: You can fly from Vancouver to Hawaii and Australia for half price

A flight from Vancouver to Honolulu can cut costs on a trip to Australia.

Flights from Vancouver to Australia can cost under half the regular price with a stopover in Hawaii.

Adding a stopover makes some itineraries more expensive while others include them for free. However, booking a flight from Vancouver to Hawaii and then a second one to Australia can take a significant chunk of change off the price tag — try several hundred dollars off the cost of a return ticket.

According to Google Flights, the least expensive round-trip flights from Vancouver International Airport (YVR) to Sydney International Airport (SYD) usually cost between $1,550 and $2,700.

While a ticket under $1,500 might be a great deal for travellers headed to the other side of the globe, buying two tickets — one heading to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) — allows them to save significantly more.

A flight from Vancouver to Honolulu can cut costs on a trip to Australia

A round-trip flight departing Vancouver on Monday, April 14 and returning from Honolulu on Monday, May 5 costs $368 with WestJet (see slide two).

According to Google Flights, this price is $662 cheaper than usual for the economy class.

A flight that departs Honolulu on Thursday, April 17 and returns from Sydney on Monday, April 28 costs $419 with JetStar (see slide four).

The price for the trip with both tickets works out to $787 ($368 + $419). This itinerary includes two nights in Hawaii on the outbound portion of the trip and a few nights back in Hawaii on the return.

Travellers who prefer to cruise home from Australia can use the same flight combination to get a cheap trip to Sydney and then sail to several bucket-list destinations starting at $145.74 per diem with Princess Cruises in April 2025.
