The demolition began on Wednesday morning for an iconic local grocery store lost to a fire in Steveston.
No. 1 Road between Chatham and Moncton roads remains closed as the tear-down work began at Super Grocer & Pharmacy shortly after 9 a.m.
An excavator was seen pulling down the front of the store, where customers used to browse for fresh bouquets of flowers, before moving on to the main structure by dismantling the roof.
The building was deemed unsafe after last Friday's fire and community members are asked to avoid the area until work has been completed.
The grocery store has announced its plans to reopen its pharmacy. Community members in need of medication can call Super Grocer's pharmacy number as the pharmacy is doing a free delivery for prescriptions.
The Richmond News understands that there are plans to rebuild the grocery store on the same site.
Meanwhile, Canada Post told the News that parcels, mail and postal products in the post office inside the grocery store are believed to be lost. The public is being redirected to other postal outlets including the Steveston Museum, which is full service and open seven days a week.
