Efforts to restore native plants at Terra Nova Rural Park will continue this weekend.
The Lower Mainland Green Team (LMGT) is inviting Richmondites to join them on Saturday to remove invasive Himalayan blackberries by the Farm Centre.
Volunteers from LMGT have been working on restoring the habitat in the area and were able to free struggling trees and shrubs during their Earth Week meet-ups earlier this year.
“While some small birds and wildlife use Himalayan blackberry for habitat and food, too much of this plant reduces the presence of other native shrubs and trees,” said LMGT program manager Ashton Kerr.
She added that more native plants will provide more “choices of food and shelter for native birds and other wildlife.”
The event, funded by the city’s environmental enhancement grant, also hopes to build community connections and teach participants about their power to support native plants and wildlife.
No experience is needed and the event is open to all ages, backgrounds and abilities. Gloves, tools, snacks and instructions will be provided by the organizers.
To sign up or to learn more about the event, visit the Meetup page or email Kerr at [email protected].
