Richmond is considering holding watch parties and other celebrations during the FIFA World Cup in 2026.

Canada, Mexico and the United States will host the FIFA World Cup 26 from June 11 to July 19, 2026, with Vancouver being one of the 16 host cities in the global event.

City staff are recommending city council consider a series of events during the World Cup, including kick-off events, watch parties, community events and grants for community groups and residents to host their own FIFA-themed community activities.

If approved, the event campaign would be included in the 2025 budget and organized in partnership with Tourism Richmond.

According to a city staff report, the recommended option features a two-day kick-off event on June 12 and 13, 2026 with activities and screening of the opening weekend matches.

Throughout the FIFA World Cup, there will be community events across the city, and public watch parties for 14 significant matches across Richmond facilities such as City Hall Plaza, Richmond Curling Centre and South Arm Outdoor Pool.

Also proposed is a three-day event with live performances, art installations, family-friendly activities and public viewing of the final and championship matches.

The FIFA Richmond celebrations are estimated to cost $700,000 with the City of Richmond contributing $300,000 and Tourism Richmond contributing $400,000.

Another option, which city staff isn't recommending, would be an 18-day "signature celebration event" that would feature more public watch parties and headlining act to close the event.

If the City of Richmond opts for a smaller-scale event campaign, Tourism Richmond will cover 50 per cent of the costs.
