Youth arrested after allegedly making online school shooting threats in Richmond

RCMP say there was nothing to indicate the threats were being followed through on.

A youth has been arrested after allegedly threatening a school shooting in Richmond.

Richmond RCMP were contacted by the school district on Saturday, saying someone was making online threats of a school shooting.

Police said the online threats claimed the shooting would take place on Monday at a specific school. Police didn't identify the school in question.

Richmond RCMP were able to identify and arrest a youth suspect on Monday.

Based on the information gathered to date, there is nothing to indicate this threat was being followed through on, said Richmond RCMP, adding "there is no further threat or concern for safety."

“This type of threat is extremely serious and we want to assure the public we took every measure possible to identify the suspect as swiftly as possible,” said Insp. Michael Cohee with Richmond RCMP Investigative Services and Community Engagement. 

“We recognize this type of threat can cause concern in our community. We want to stress that, in addition to gathering investigative evidence, our officers were continually conducting risk assessments and putting measures in place to ensure the safety and security of our community.”

Richmond RCMP encourages anyone who comes across potential online threats to contact police immediately.
