Five more toxic drug deaths recorded in Richmond

A total of five people died due to toxic drugs in Richmond in August and September, according to the latest statistics from the BC Coroners Service.

The coroner recently released two months of data of how many people died from drugs tainted with toxic chemicals such as fentanyl and bromazolam, a synthetic benzodiazepine.

Statistics show four people died in Richmond in August and one in September.

Across B.C., on average, six people died every day from toxic drugs.

The majority of toxic drug deaths, about 81 per cent, took place indoors.

Seventy-four per cent of those who died were men.

Hydromorphone was detected in three per cent of people who died.

In B.C., from January to September, 1,749 people died from toxic drugs, about eight per cent fewer compared to the same time period in 2023.
