The two regulation size playing fields at Hugh Boyd are expected to be completed in time for the 27th annual Richmond Soccer Thanksgiving Tournament and Festival.
The boys and girls event is one of the largest in Western Canada. The tournament will take place Oct. 12-13 while the festival for younger kids will be held on Oct. 14.
“We have been told that Boyd Red and Blue - the big fields - will be ready early October and we will have them available for the Tournament. Boyd Yellow and White won't be ready until the end of October,” said Richmond FC chair Rein Weber.
“Its going to be jammed at all other fields, that is for sure!”
The $1.8 million Boyd turf project is replacing the original surfaces that were installed in 2006 that at the time made it one of the largest of its kind in Western Canada.
The projected lifespan of a synthetic sports field is between eight to 12 years depending on the usage and maintenance of the field.
Boyd is usually typically booked for up to 155 hours per week during the peak fall/winter season. The field is tested annually for its shock attenuation performance and had reached its limit as being acceptable for safe operation.
