Richmond Colts are city juvenile boys basketball champions after capping a dominant run with a 75-57 win over the McMath Wildcats in Thursday’s title game played at Richmond High.
The Colts went 8-0 in regular season play then secured their spot in the final with wins over Burnett (82-27) and Steveston-London (64-34). The Wildcats had also produced impressive wins over McNair (72-38) and MacNeill (66-46).
Richmond High defeated McMath by just seven points (49-42) back in early December and the rematch featured its offence firing close to all cylinders.
Both teams now head to the Vancouver and District Championships starting on Tuesday at Windsor Secondary in North Vancouver. The Colts open against North Shore runner-up Argyle while McMcMath faces Burnaby/New West League second place finisher Burnaby South.
Steveston-London Sharks can join their rivals at the eight-team event with a wild card game win on Monday over Burnaby Mountain.
Richmond High has now won two of the three boys city titles determined so far with the Bantam squad defeating Burnett a week earlier. The senior team will be title hunting next week at Steveston-London as the No. 2 seed.
