An eight-year-old Richmond athlete won silver at a Taekwondo championship last weekend.

Logan Minshall competed at the 2024 Western Canadian Championships in Calgary on Nov. 29 and 30.

He won his first fight by a judge's decision, which set him up for a tough gold medal match.

In the finals, Minshall's opponent received two warnings and a foul for using excessive contact.

After a two-minute regulation match, the fight was deemed a draw and went into overtime.

The fight went into a second and third overtime match after that, both ending in draws.

They entered a sudden-death round in the fourth fight under International Taekwondo Federation rules.

Minshall lost by one point and finished in second place.

"I know if I had another two minutes in there, I would’ve had him," said Minshall.

"He was tough. Probably the toughest guy I’ve ever fought. And there were a lot of questionable calls related to his excessive force."

Minshall said the Western Canadian Championships made up for the disappointment of not placing at this year's provincial championships.

"I wanted to make up for that and I think I did here with the silver medal.”

Kayce Hopwood, Minshall's mom, said his final match was scary because he got hurt.

"He's still hurt but that's the nature of the game," said Hopwood.

"He fought extremely well during the weekend and that's all I could ask. This is his passion and I'm very proud of all my son has accomplished."
