Richmond figure skating club Connaught is sending five athletes to the national novice championships in Calgary this weekend.
In the novice men’s section, the club will be represented by 14-year-olds David Li, Neo Tran and Tehryn Lee.
In the novice pairs event, Connaught will have Jessie Sun, 13 and Victor Lum, 18.
With 18 competitors in each category, the competition will be strong, but hopes are high for the Richmond quintet to medal.
“I am going to feel really excited to show all of Canada how hard I have been working on my programs,” said David Li.
"When I finish my long program, I want to have accomplished everything I have been working on for the past 12 months."
While Jessie Sun said that she’s “really excited to show off our throw double jumps because it is one of our strongest elements."
The athletes’ coach, Keegan Murphy, said the club is extremely proud of the “high quality” of skating being produced.
“It is especially remarkable as they have reached this incredible championships after persevering through the pandemic,” said Murphy.
“Their determination and resilience is well beyond their young age."
