McMath secondary's Grade 9 girls volleyball team pounced into second place at the provincial championships this past weekend.
The Wildcats were pitted against Earl Marriot secondary at the provincials – held at Lord Tweedsmuir secondary on Nov. 18 to 19 – who claimed the winning title.
The team’s silver medal comes after capturing the Richmond Championship title, taking out Hugh Boyd secondary three sets straight in the finals, as well as claiming second place at the South Fraser Volleyball Championships (SFVC).
Jessie Huang received tournament all-star recognition for her defensive and offensive play at both the SFVC and provincials, while Aleah Kippan earned tournament all-star honours at the SFVC for her striking.
The Wildcats were also led by fierce attacks from Gabriela Frandsen, Fern Buckley, Ava Mirhosseini and Mirella-Fernandes-Boshell.
Lalia Yekanifard and Fiorella Vega were on-point with their passing, and Mirai Haupt and Frances Scallion rounded out the team contribution with key plays during each tournament.
During the regular season, McMath only lost two games, both to Earl Marriot secondary who beat McMath in the finals at the SFVC and at provincials to win the title.
