The Richmond Junior Roadrunners didn’t go down without a fight.
The B.C. Junior “B” Tier One Lacrosse League club saw its season end on Sunday afternoon in a 12-11 overtime loss to the Victoria Shamrocks at Minoru Arenas.
The best-of-three opening round series looked to be a mismatch on paper with the eighth seeded Roadrunners (5-13-0) up against the regular season champion Shamrocks (14-3-1). Also throw in the fact starting goaltender Riku Jokela and head coach Neil Doddridge were unavailable for the series as members of Team Finland at the World Field Lacrosse Championships in Israel.
Despite the adversity, Richmond battled hard like it has all season.
Victoria posted a 10-5 win in the provincial capital on Saturday but trailed for much of game two. The hosts took a 9-6 lead into the final 20 minutes when the Shamrocks fought back to force overtime.
They outscored Richmond 2-1 in the 10-minute non-sudden-death overtime period.
Cade Blouin had a big game in a losing cause with a goal and seven assists. Jordan Roberts scored four times, while Josh Bourne and Ryan Jensen had two each. Jaden Bourne and Jaden Leach rounded out the scoring.
In the series opener, goaltender Tyler Pongracz was terrific, making 50 saves.
