McMath secondary’s champion streak continues after the Grade 9 girls' volleyball team took home gold at Tuesday’s South Fraser Zone Championships.
The team was seeded third overall and came into the championships blazing. As last year’s silver medalist, they had their eyes set on the champion title all season, explained coach Kevin Shen.
He told the Richmond News the team led the regular season 8-1, having lost to Burnett secondary, and swept last week’s Richmond playoffs without dropping a single set.
After sweeping pool play last Saturday, the team managed to beat Burnett secondary in the quarter-finals before upsetting second-seed South Delta in the semifinals.
They ultimately beat first-seed and last year’s provincial champion, the Earl Marriott Mariners, 3-1 on Tuesday.
McMath’s Kaiya Tien and Cindy Lee were recognized as South Fraser All-Stars, while teammate Sofia Sekhon nabbed the MVP title.
“All 12 athletes showed exceptional energy, talent, and perseverance throughout the entire tournament run, finally finishing at the top,” said Shen.
The victory came after the McMath Junior Girls Wildcats won the Richmond city volleyball championship on Nov. 8.
The team will be competing in this weekend’s provincial championships.
