Richmond lacrosse team secures bronze at provincial championships

Richmond defeats Maple Ridge with a 6-5 victory.

Richmond's U18 Roadrunners field lacrosse team won bronze at the BC Provincial Championships this weekend.

The local team competed in the U18 tier two division of the tournament, which was held from Feb. 28 to March 2 in Richmond, Maple Ridge and Coquitlam fields.

The Roadrunners took on the Ridge Meadows Burrards and won the bronze medal game in two overtime period matches ending in a 6-5 victory.

The Coquitlam Adanacs defeated the New Westminster Salmonbellies in the gold medal game.

The Roadrunners' U18 team consists of players born between 2007 and 2009, with the four team leaders Owen Carnahan, Caleb Jang, Kaden Ng and Jack Wallace, all born in 2007, "retiring."

Both Richmond and Vancouver lacrosse have struggled with numbers over the last few years. Therefore, they have frequently joined the leagues together to be “RichVan."

In this case, players were released from their city (Vancouver) to play with Richmond, according to Paul McGinley, vice-president of field lacrosse with the Richmond Lacrosse Association.

The future of field lacrosse in Richmond is "uncertain" as there may be a shortage of players next season as the number of athletes born in 2010 who play lacrosse are very low, and they don't know yet if any new players are joining, McGinley said in a media statement.

"Lacrosse is Canada's national summer sport and Richmond has many programs to encourage families to try lacrosse for free each year," said McGinley.

Meanwhile, this year's box lacrosse season is already underway and runs until June.
