After a lengthy hiatus, girls are playing again at the Richmond Rugby Football Club.
An Under 18 team, filled with players from four area high schools, began their season of play earlier this month with a game against United Rugby Club based in the Tri-Cities area. While there is a varying level of skills amongst the Richmond girls, the team was able to keep the game close, falling 15-10 to their experienced opponent
The following week, they won 5-0 over the Cowichan Piggies Rugby Club on Vancouver Island. The hard work and dedication by the players has delighted coach Kim Stockman.
"The girls are very enthusiastic and, for a new team, are coming together strongly, playing well against a relatively cohesive opponent [United RFC] for their first game."
Richmond did have the advantage in terms of both possession and territory for the majority of the game.
Stockman's work as head coach has been aided by Joe Dimayuga and Josh Poehlke.
The girls will host their first home game on Sunday (11: 30 a.m. kickoff) against Abbotsford at King George Park and are excited at being the newest members of the RRFC Red and Black community.
