Travelling has been on the mind of many people and it’s no different for a Richmond figure skating star.
Sixteen-year-old figure Wesley Chiu is excited to not only be able to fly internationally, but also to represent Canada in the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating – a series of international junior-level competitions – in Courcheval, France next week.
Chiu said he’s been preparing for the event with a lot of fitness training and running through his program “over and over” again.
“I’m looking forward to travelling and going somewhere to compete because we haven’t had that opportunity in a while due to COVID-19,” said Chiu, adding that he is honoured and excited to have been selected.
Chiu, who trains with the Richmond-based Connaught Skating Club, said he was placed in Skate Canada’s NextGen Team along with others skaters who could potentially represent Canada on a junior level gathered.
“They would watch our performances or how we’re doing and then we get chosen by Skate Canada,” he said.
Chiu’s main goal is to skate to the best of his ability in France and by the end of the season he hopes to represent Canada at the end of the ISU Junior Worlds.
