The hard luck Richmond Roadrunners settled for fourth place at B.C. Intermediate "A" Lacrosse Championships in New Westminster.
The Roadrunners were denied a spot on the podium after a 10-9 overtime loss to the Langley Thunder in Monday's bronze medal game. Richmond had rallied to take a 9-8 lead, only to surrender the tying goal with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation time. The Thunder managed the only goal of the 10-minute non-sudden death overtime period.
Twenty-four hours earlier, the Roadrunners were a win away from clinching a spot in the championship game but dropped a 6-5 decision to the Coquitlam Adanacs. The locals enjoyed a 3-1 lead before Coquitlam rallied for the victory.
Richmond had opened the four-team tournament with a 9-6 loss to Langley, then upset regular season champion New West 7-6. The Salmonbellies recovered to trounce Coquitlam 16-4 in the gold medal game.
The provincial championships concluded an outstanding season for a Richmond team that returned to the intermediate "A" level just one year earlier. The Roadrunners clinched a B.C. berth by finishing second in league play with an 18-6 record.
