A scholarship fund has been created in the memory of longtime Richmond high school teacher Bill “Coach” McKittrick who passed away last week at 76.
The McKittrick family and the Richmond School District have teamed up to launch the Bill McKittrick Scholarship Fund.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to: David Partridge, Richmond SD 38 Scholarships, Richmond School District 38, 7811 Granville Avenue, Richmond, BC. V6Y 3E3. Phone inquiries 604-668-6000 ext 1547 for any questions on the scholarship.
After graduating from UBC in 1970, McKittrick taught in the Richmond School District for many years.
He will be remembered fondly by the generations of kids he taught English, as well as coaching football too — initially at Richmond High then Steveston.
He worked alongside some legendary coaches including Ian Anderson, Doug Staveley and Jeff Lochbaum.
“Bill always wanted to be called Coach McKittrick and not Mr. McKittrick,” recalled his former teaching colleague Bob Jackson. “When we shared an office, if a student stated that he wanted to see Mr. Jackson, Bill would tell the student that my name was ‘Coach Jackson.’”
A Celebration of McKittrick’s Life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 23 (2 p.m.) at the Richmond Funeral Home.
