An outstanding season in the B.C. Hockey League has paved the way for Ty Taylor to take his career to the University of Hampshire next season on a lucrative scholarship deal with the NCAA Division One program.
The 18-year-old Richmond native has a stellar 22-5-3 record in his second season with the Vernon Vipers. He leads the league in save percentage (.932) and goals-against average (1.83). His seven shutouts has tied the league’s single season record. To no surprise, he was named Wednesday as one of three finalists for the league’s top goaltender award.
Taylor played for Seafair Minor’s rep program before spending a season at the Delta Hockey Academy where he played for the Midget prep team and posted a 15-3 record and .943 save percentage. He signed with the Richmond Sockeyes but cracked the Vipers’ line-up as a 17-year-old.
At UNH, Taylor will join a Wildcats program that competes in the NCAA’s Hockey East conference along with Maine, Boston College, Vermont, Providence, Massachusetts, Boston University, Northeastern, UMass-Lowell, Merrimack and Connecticut. The Wildcats play on an Olympic-size ice surface and are coached by longtime bench boss Dick Umile, who is in his 27th season with the program.
BCHL alums on the Wildcats roster this season are Michael McNicholas, Adam Clark, Cam Marks, Dylan Chanter, Joe Sacco, Marcus Vela and Liam Blackburn.
