Arjan Bhullar left for Istanbul, Turkey this week to compete at the Senior Wrestling World Championships.
The 25-year-old Richmond native is the five-time defending Canadian heavyweight champion who is looking for further success overseas. Last year, he produced the biggest international win of his career by capturing gold at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.
The past few months Bhullar has been busy travelling and training for the World Championships.
Part of the hard work was rewarded recently in Surrey when he received the "highest achievement award" in wrestling in front of over 10,000 people.
His father, Avtar Singh Bhullar, was also honored with a "lifetime achievement award" in wrestling. Avtar won many tournaments while wrestling in Canada, England and India. He was a fascinating athlete that represented true sportsmanship.
The biggest challenge for the young Bhullar will be this weekend when he faces the best wrestlers in the world.
There are over 40 wrestlers in his 120 kg weight class and over 150 countries competing in the World Senior Championships The elimination rounds for the heavyweight division will start Sunday morning, followed by the finals in the evening.
