A martial artist based in Richmond is heading to China later this year to compete in Chinese kung fu wrestling, also known as shuai jiao.
Aden Wu, 18, was chosen to represent Canada at the World Shuai-Jiao Games at Baoding City in China's Hebei province on Oct. 25.
He had impressed by winning gold in the men's 75 kg division at the Canadian Kung Fu-Wrestling Championships held in Windsor, Ont. on June 22.
"I felt both shocked and excited at the same time," Wu told the Richmond News.
"It took me quite a while to wrap my head around the idea that I was actually going to compete in the World Shuai Jiao Games in October; better yet, I would be representing Canada."
Wu began practicing shuai jiao about two years ago, motivated by his desire to win and improve, as well as the joy he felt from the sport.
Shuai jiao is an activity for "self-cultivation," Wu explained, adding that it benefits both mental and physical health.
"I would like to encourage others to practice shuai jiao, as it's incredibly fun," said.
"It's helped me tremendously with developing mental fortitude and improving my fitness levels."
With the world tournament being three months away, Wu will have to undergo "hard training."
"I'm looking to sharpen my skills and learn as many little tips and tricks along the way," he said.
"Unfortunately, I will also have to diet, and will not get the chance to indulge in snacks and sweets as I normally do."
