The Vancouver Airport Authority (VAA) announced they are reducing their workforce as the number of passengers continues to plummet at YVR because of COVID-19.

VAA, the organization that runs YVR, is seeing a dramatic impact from the slowdown in the global aviation industry because of the pandemic outbreak. YVR is expecting to operate as a “smaller airport” than before, according to a media release.

A YVR spokesperson, said airport authority employees – comprised of just over 500 people – began to receive notices of the reduction process on Wednesday.

Voluntary departure packages are being offered first to workers, with layoffs to follow.

“Layoffs will be forthcoming once we understand the response to the voluntary departure packages and will affect both management and bargaining unit employees,” said the YVR spokesperson.

“This is a challenging time for everyone and out of respect for our employees, we are unable to share more information.”

More information on the airport authority’s staff reduction will come in the following weeks.
