The Editor,
Re: "Blaze proves need for pipeline: Consortium," News, Feb. 22.
Adrian Pollard has it all wrong when he states that the Cherry Point Refinery "blaze proves need for pipeline" through Richmond.
Can you imagine 80 million litres of jet fuel on fire next to the Riverport Entertainment district and waterfront residences?
The existing pipeline from a Canadian refinery in Burnaby isn't running at capacity and flow could be increased. The Vancouver Airport Consortium sources jet fuel from an American refinery at Cherry Point because it is cheaper. Jet fuel is cheaper still when brought through the Panama Canal by Panamex Supertanker. Our health, safety and the Fraser River Estuary are expendable in the pursuit of profit.
